In my Red science class, I conducted a radiation popcorn experiment. What i had to do was microwave popcorn. I know what your probably thinking which is that this has nothing to do with science whatsoever and that this is just a lame excuse to satisfy my hunger in science class but your wrong! This lab showed radiation and how heat is transferred with molecules. Radiation is the process in which air is heated and this process is the only way that the heat is transferred to move around in areas of space. Radiation causes molecules from the popcorn to vibrate and it moves the heat in the kernels which causes the popcorn to pop. The moisture in the popcorn kernels extend when the moisture inside the kernels get hot enough which makes them build up pressure transform into popcorn. In order for this to happen, there has to be a certain amount of heat in order for the popcorn to pop. This is how your favorite movie snack that seems simple is made. This proves that even the simplest aspects of life can deal with science. Next time you should ponder the simplest things in life and then you can see the nothing is actually simple. ~Vikinggirl15<3>

After putting the heated can filled with water vapor into a tub of ice cold water it will make the heated molecules cool instantly. When the can gets put into the water it makes the vapor condense and force all the air into the can to push all the air out. This makes the can get all scrunched up and close together in a flash. You may think this is magic but this is merely just science and the process of air pressure. :DD I recommend trying this at home because its easy to do and I enjoyed this experiment! ~Vikinggirl<3

A few important facts I learned were:
*The problems begin when human activities change the natural process by creating more greenhouse gases in the atmosphere than are necessary to warm the planet to an ideal temperature.
*Scientists agree that even the smallest increase in the global climate would lead to significant climate and weather changes, affecting cloud cover, precipitation, wind patterns, the frequency of storms, and the length of seasons.
*Many of the world’s endangered species would become extinct as rising temperatures changed their habitat.

This proves that WE are the ones who are causing the greenhouse effects that are occurring in the atmosphere. Therefore, we have to find a way to stop this before chaos breaks loose and the place that is now called Earth will turn into a disastrous place of havoc, destruction, and devastation! I was absolutely shocked when I read this article and now I just hope that the worse isn't going to happen and that Earth will still be able to sustain us and all the future generations that are yet to come. :0) ~Vikinggirl<3

http://environment.about.com/od/globalwarming/a/greenhouse_2.htm
^
This is the link for the article I read and mentioned in this blog post!

In my red science class, we were given the assignment to dissect a frog. Personally, I felt that the dissection didn't seem so bad once we started exploring our frogs. The purpose of this assignment was to see the organs in the structure of the frog and to identify what each organ did for the frog. It seemed fairly easy to learn all the major functions and parts of a frog. Others may have hated this activity or thought that this assigment was intricate however, I thought it was way better than taking a written test on the frog. This dissection helped me learn about the frog and all of its systems and functions which gave me a better understanding of how the frog's body works. Hopefully, I will get the oppertunity to experiance dissections again so I can learn more about the major functions of other organisms. :D ~Vikinggirl15<3>

Although this may sound easy to do however, it really isn't. The reason for that is because if you don't do one thing correctly, you won't be able to hit the window which was what kept happening to my group. What happened was that my group couldn't do this procedure correctly which made us uncapable to hitting the window. We were so close a few times however, we couldn't hit the window. Even though we didn't hit the window, we still learned how to collect data and how chemical reactions form. In my opinion, I felt that that experiment was a fun way to learn about chemical reactions and that its more fun than just completing worksheets on chemical reactions. Hopefully, we can do more experiments like this one instead of completing worksheets and wasting paper. :)~vikinggirl15<3vikinggirl15http://www.blogger.com/profile/02300221075129426302noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-445404201679410809.post-40613355812280267352009-10-22T15:40:00.000-07:002009-10-22T16:12:04.625-07:00Blog #2 Current Event :)Did you know that there are only four specimens of the Yangtze giant softshell turtles left on Earth? Well there is, one in the wild and three in captivity. Now conservation partners from different societies are trying to save this species. On May 5th, 2008, turtle biologists, veterinarians, and zoo staff from different organizations came up with a plan to save the entire species. Their plan was to transport the turtles in order for the turtles to start a reproductive cycle and save the whole species from extinction. Yangtze giant softshell turtles are the most critically endangered species of turtles in the world and extinction risk is higher than ever! In my opinion, I think that this is a serious matter for the Yangtze giant softshell turtles and I hope that eventually, the population of these turtles will increase and become normal again. Also, I hope that in the future, these turtles will become a specie that will last a long time before they become extinct for good. ~Vikinggirl15<3

I retrieved this information at: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/05/080521154206.htmvikinggirl15http://www.blogger.com/profile/02300221075129426302noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-445404201679410809.post-68403230024908063582009-09-23T14:13:00.000-07:002009-09-23T14:31:19.132-07:00My Current Event Blog Yellow Science :)In Greenburg, Kansas on May 4, 2007 a terrifying tornado killed eleven people and caused Greenburg to face the challenge to rebuild everything from scratch. Two years later (2009), Greenburg decided to give their name a purpose by becoming a green community of the future. City leaders are using solar and wind technologies to control power and geothermal heat. They are also saving energy by constucting with solid concrete, using more natural light, and putting better filling and state-of-the-art windows. In my opinion, I think that becoming a green community is a great way to help our environment and hopefully Greenburg won't be the only place with a green community in the future. The events in this movie took place in October 5, 1957 and most of those events were connected to science and math. One connection was that this movie showed a group of boys wanted to build rockets and launch them however, one of the boys named Homer Hakim had a father who despised the idea of his son building those rockets. Instead, Homer's father wanted him to work in the coal mines just like he did but that wasn't what Homer had in mind. Homer and his friends decided to enter a rocket in the science fair after being inspired by Miss Riley who was one of the teachers. Every time the friends made a rocket, they kept improving it to make it better. Homer and his friends were determined to win the science fair and never stopped believing in themselves. Also in this movie, many character traits were displayed and not displayed by different characters. For example, Homer's father didn't show respect for Homer because he didn't support Homer with what he wanted to do which was to build rockets. In addition, Homer showed self-control because when his father told him that he wasn't happy about the idea of his son building rockets, Homer controlled his feelings and just came up with a new idea to solve that problem. Lastly, this movie was a very intresting movie with a powerful meaning to it abd it impacted me by sending me a message saying that I should just believe in myself to do things i want to do in life. ~Vikinggirl15vikinggirl15http://www.blogger.com/profile/02300221075129426302noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-445404201679410809.post-57645788833582609742009-05-06T08:43:00.000-07:002009-05-07T18:05:41.653-07:00My Response to Patau's SyndromeI just reccently read BubbleCutie99's blog on this upsetting disease called Patau's Syndrome. This disease affects 15% of the population but mostly males. When a baby is born of this disease, it dies between 4-8 weeks of birth. If the baby survives, it suffers serious mental retardation. Patau's Syndrome deforms the brain and the upper lip. There is basically no treatment to this disease because most of the time the baby ends up dying 4-8 weeks as already stated. Personally, this makes me feel sad because i feel bad for the people with disease and they can't do anything about it. Hopefully in the future, this disease wont affect as many people as it does today and hopefully, lives would be brighter for future generations. This disease was discovered in 1886. In the U.S. Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease affects about 1 in 3,300 people. Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease occurs in all races and ethnic groups, however often males are effected slightly more than females but is possibly due to an increased likelihood or nerve trauma. The specific gene that is altered categorizes this disease. All types are caused by mutations in certain genes. To most people, it was an exciting and unforgettable moment in history. A lot of people went to Washington to witness history in the making. As it stands now, Barack Obama is now our 44Th president in the United States.

As onlookers took in the sight of Obama during the inauguration several thoughts crossed their minds. For example, "It's the first time in my life I've ever had someone to look up to. I'm a mixed, multi-ethnic, multinational person, and I've never had someone I could look up to politically and say, 'That's somebody who can represent me. That's somebody who I can relate to. That's somebody that my family can relate to,' and the fact that he actually made it into office is just ... it gives me hope that I can do whatever I want to do in my life and not have a glass ceiling above me," as expressed by one of the onlookers. People witnessing the inauguration had felt a deep connection with our 44Th president. The onlookers really look up to him as he now represents our nation. In my opinion, I think that Obama is a perfect choice for president and i think that he will do a great job as president.

http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/01/20/obama.reaction/index.html

"Our nation is at war, against a far reaching network of violence and hatred," Obama said. "Our economy is badly weakened, a consequence of greed and irresponsibility on the part of some, but also our collective failure to make hard choices and prepare the nation for a new age."said our new President at his inauguration. My analysis: the inauguration of Barack Obama was a significant event in history because he is the first African-American president in history. In my opinion, I think that it was a great idea for people to vote for Barack Obama because I believe that maybe the problems we are having trouble with now might be impacted by this change in history. However, I am still not quite sure if people wanted to vote for Obama or if the people just want a democratic president after having a republican for eight years?

http://www.willitsnews.com/ci_11513447

vikinggirl15http://www.blogger.com/profile/02300221075129426302noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-445404201679410809.post-67445252694615422692009-01-07T13:18:00.000-08:002009-01-08T16:34:16.903-08:00Baby Dolphin Saved By a Life Jacket

In Tokyo, Japan a baby dolphin was saved by a custom-made life jacket after getting caught in fishing nets. That picture was taken in South Brunswick. My pet rabbit and i show mutualism which is a symbiotic relationship in which both organisms benefit. In this relationship, my rabbit benefits because it is provided food and shelter while i have a companion that i take care of and play with. This is an important relationship because with pets they teach you responsibility, you become less lonely, and they always brighten up your day. Without pets like rabbits, life would be more stressful and you wouldn't be the happiest person in the world. It is also said that if you have a pet it will increase your lifespan too. For some penguins, global warming is taking away precious areas which is where they raise their babies. However, for others food is becoming increasingly in short supply because global warming is in conjunction with overfishing. Now the penguins are in a tough battle to adapt to the unpredictable changing weather. Also for many years, sea ice has been breaking off earlier than they are supposed to (because of climate changes) and many chicks and eggs have drifted away before being able to survive on their own causing them to die by not having anyone to take care of them or feed them. This is a sad and depressing thing to happen and i hope that penguins don't become extinct and that penguins will still be here in the future. I got this information from: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/12/071213203604.htm

vikinggirl15http://www.blogger.com/profile/02300221075129426302noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-445404201679410809.post-43549093631442827852008-11-13T11:17:00.000-08:002008-11-13T11:21:33.530-08:00Current event- Polar Bears

Today polar bears from the artic are becoming endangered, even though the population has increased from the late 1960s. The question is why is this happening, this is happening because of loss of sea ice and the loss of sea ice is caused by global warning. Now today there are ONLY 25,000 POLAR BEARS LEFT! That might be a big number to you but it isn't for a population. Hopefully we can help these animals and stop them from extinction..http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/tech/2008/05/14/sot.polar.bear.status.cnnbear.status.cnnclick this link to see my article

vikinggirl15http://www.blogger.com/profile/02300221075129426302noreply@blogger.com0
